What More Can I Give

What More Can I Give  est une chanson caritative composée et écrite par Michael Jackson, et enregistrée, avec de nombreux artistes, après les attentats du 11 septembre 2001.

L’idée de la chanson a germé dans l’esprit de Michael après une rencontre avec le président d’Afrique du Sud Nelson Mandela à la fin des années 1990.

Le titre était semble-t-il, au départ un duo avec Luciano Pavarotti, mais suite à des désaccords et annulation de participation à des concerts, l’enregistrement ne s’est pas fait.

Michael évoque pour la première fois le titre lors de son passage dans l’émission allemande Wetten Dass, où il vient parler des concerts caritatifs MJ and Friends de Séoul et Munich, au profit des victimes de la guerre du Kosovo.

Il avait envisagé de la chanter lors de ces concerts mais cela ne s’est finalement pas fait. La chanson est pourtant bien présente sur  les billets vendus et les programmes du show.

Le titre est également évoqué dans le dessin aux extrémités de la scène des concerts MJ and Friends des 25 et 27 juin 1999. Il semble que ce dessin soit par ailleurs inspiré d’une des photos de Prince, le fils aîné de Michael.

Le titre reste donc inconnu, jusqu’au moment où, le 11 septembre 2001, New York subit de terribles attentats. Michael annonce qu’il va enregistrer le titre en l’honneur des victimes, avec de nombreux artistes comme Usher, Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake, Luther Vandross, Céline Dion, ……

Le single aurait dû être commercialisé mais cela ne s’est pas fait pour des raisons de droits détenus par le producteur et d’entente avec la maison de disques Sony (Sony n’aurait pas voulu promouvoir le single car il était produit par Marc Shaffel, qui avait des liens dans le milieu pornographique). Il sera finalement commercialisé, en 2003, mais uniquement en téléchargement légal.

Michael a tout fait pour  que le titre fonctionne: un clip a été tourné, reprenant des images des sessions d’enregistrement (diffusé pour la première fois aux Radio Music Awards 2003), une version espagnole a été enregistrée, écrite par Ruben Blades, Todo Para Ti, et Michael avait demandé à un artiste brésilien, Romero Britto, de  réaliser la pochette du single.

Le 21 octobre 2001, les artistes ont donné un concert de 14 heures, United We Stand: What More Can I Give au Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium à Washington devant 54 000 personnes et retransmis, quelques jours après, sur la chaîne américaine ABC. Michael y interprétera le titre en compagnie des artistes présents.

Il chantera également Man In The Mirror, une représentation mémorable au cours de laquelle Michael monte sur une grue et s’enroule dans le drapeau américain, ce qui provoque un mouvement de joie dans le public. (voir ici)

A la fin de cette prestation, il s’adresse au public:

« J’aimerais que chacun et chacune d’entre vous regarde son voisin dans les yeux. Je veux que tout le monde le fasse, s’il vous plait. Maintenant, joignez vos mains et levez-les vers le ciel. Tous ensemble! Ressentez cette humanité en vous. Ne le faîtes pas parce que je vous le demande mais parce que c’est la bonne chose à faire. Maintenant, je vous demande un moment d’amour et de silence. Ce soir, nous sommes tous réunis pour nous demander « Que pouvons-nous donner de plus? » Quand vous partirez d’ici, essayez de donner votre amour partout où vous le pouvez, aux quatre coins de la Terre. Voilà ce que nous pouvons donner, voilà ce qui peut changer les choses. C’est très important. Je voudrais adresser un message aux familles des victimes du 11 septembre: vous n’êtes pas seules. Vous êtes dans notre coeur, dans nos pensées, dans nos prières » (traduction Black & White magazine)

What More Can I Give restera peu connu, à part dans le milieu des fans. Il n’a cependant pas le même aura que We Are The World, qui restera un des titres emblématiques de l’action humanitaire de Michael.
